Bayreuth Celebrates 100 Years of Black History Month

Tuesday, 02/03/2026, 08:00 AM

To mark the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, the Iwalewahaus at the University of Bayreuth presents "100 Years of Black History in Bayreuth", a landmark exhibition and cultural event that celebrates a century of storytelling, resilience, and artistic excellence within Bayreuth's Black community.

The exhibition will run from 3 February to 28 February 2026 at the Iwalewahaus and features an inspiring selection of works by both established and emerging artists from the student community. The exhibition is curated by students from the African Verbal and Visual Arts (AVVA) programme. Visitors can experience a diverse range of paintings, photography, multimedia works, and performances.

More than a tribute to the past, the exhibition is also a powerful call to the future. For the past 100 years, art has served as a means of truth-telling, liberation, and joy within Black communities. With this exhibition, the Iwalewahaus celebrates this legacy while fostering the voices that will shape the next century.

The general public is warmly invited to celebrate the legacy of Black history in Bayreuth. School groups are also welcome and may register for guided visits.
