In the ACTION for MEN research project, exercise motivators were identified through cooperative planning groups, which also revealed a lack of exercise programs specifically designed for men in the second half of life.
Building on these findings, a research project at the University of Bayreuth developed, implemented, and evaluated a health and fitness program tailored to men and their age-specific needs. The Männersache course takes into account age-related changes in physical performance and the corresponding physical demands that arise later in life. Its focus on men aged 50 and over—and therefore on exclusively male groups—also requires consideration of male-specific motivators and barriers to physical activity.
The evaluation showed positive effects on a range of health indicators and on physical activity behavior. Significant improvements were observed particularly in psychosocial health resources, such as self-efficacy and positive mood, as well as in overall well-being.
A sample of the course manual is available here. A sample lesson plan for the first session can be accessed here.
The Männersache course is certified by the Central Prevention Agency (ZPP) and has been awarded the Pluspunkt Gesundheit quality seal by the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB). In cooperation with the DTB, the first digital version of the course manual was subsequently developed.
The digital course manual, together with supplementary materials and the full set of lesson plans, is available in the online shop here (in German).
As part of Health.eduPLUS, lesson plans on health in physical education were developed in collaboration with physical education teachers, school administrators, students, and researchers. These lesson plans are available for download here.
Key information on planning and implementing a SportCard was compiled on the basis of results from the cooperative planning groups. The SportCard is a joint initiative of local sports clubs and other exercise providers aiming to open up their programs and encourage more people to become physically active. The SportCard guide is available for download here.
