PhD Programme
Independent philosophical research in an international academic environment
The PhD Programme in Philosophy at the University of Bayreuth offers doctoral researchers the opportunity to pursue independent philosophical research within a dynamic, international, and interdisciplinary environment. Embedded within the faculty’s graduate school (BayKULT), the programme combines close individual supervision with opportunities for academic exchange, professional development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
At Bayreuth, doctoral study in philosophy is understood as the development of rigorous, independent, and original philosophical thought in dialogue with contemporary debates and wider intellectual traditions. Doctoral researchers are encouraged to cultivate their own philosophical voice while participating actively in a vibrant research community.
Why Bayreuth?
Close supervision
Doctoral researchers work closely with a primary supervisor while benefiting from dialogue with other faculty members and researchers where relevant to their project.
Research community
Participation in colloquia, workshops, conferences, and graduate seminars supports scholarly exchange and integration into an active academic community.
Professional development
Doctoral researchers are encouraged to develop a broad range of academic and transferable skills, including teaching experience, academic communication, and preparation for professional pathways both within and beyond academia.
Programme framework
The programme is normally completed within three to four years. Alongside dissertation research, doctoral researchers are encouraged to engage in:
- graduate seminars and colloquia

How to apply
Prospective candidates with an excellent Master’s degree in philosophy or a closely related field are warmly encouraged to explore the following pathways:
Apply for an open PhD position
Doctoral positions associated with current research projects or permanent faculty members are regularly advertised by the department. These positions are typically connected to specific research questions or thematic areas.
Apply with your own funding
Candidates may also pursue doctoral research by applying for external funding through national or international funding agencies. In most cases, this process begins with preliminary contact with a member of the department whose research aligns with the proposed project.
