A modern degree, meeting modern challenges

We view both economics and philosophy – and especially their integration – as complementary approaches to analyzing allocation, distribution, and institutional mechanisms in a world that requires new forms of global governance. The program is targeted at students who seek advanced analytical and quantitative training as a foundation for pursuing research-oriented careers in academia, public service, and the private sector.

Through its wide range of courses across philosophy, international politics, economics and their respective subfields, the program stands out by both the depth of its teaching and its intellectual freedom. This environment is further complemented by regular guest speakers, research presentations, and events such as the Wittgenstein Lectures, which expose students to different perspectives while simultaneously allowing for deeper specialization.

Interdisciplinarity & individuality

Our MA program is designed for curious, ambitious minds who want to think across boundaries. After building a strong foundation in the core areas of philosophy and economics, you can tailor your studies to a wide range of electives. Through integrating both disciplines into interdisciplinary seminars, for instance by linking ethical questions with foundational empirical analysis, you are enabled to develop a sharp analytical path and unique academic identity. This flexibility allows you to build your own distinctive profile that reflects your passions and strengths.

Research-led teaching

The PE program takes its commitment to research-led teaching seriously: courses are taught by faculty whose research closely aligns with the subject matter, and instructors actively engage students in exploring innovative ideas and methods. Students benefit from excellent academic support, with close interaction fostering individual guidance and meaningful exchange. In addition, regular research seminars and workshops organized by both departments provide students with exposure to leading international scholarship.

The two-year international program is jointly organized and taught by the Departments of Philosophy and Economics. After having gained solid advancement in micro-, macro-, and empirical economics as well as ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of the social sciences, the program allows you to specialize according to your individual interests and aptitude.

Each semester, the departments of philosophy and economics welcome scholars from around the world to present and discuss their research. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the regular research seminars and to join the international lecture series, conferences, and colloquia hosted by both departments.
